Note

The invitation for design studios to communicate a fundamental component of visual grammar for an exhibition facilitates the situation where graphic design – about graphic design – is presented within what is traditionally an art context. This opens conversations to both the formal and commercial nature of graphic design, and its forever fluctuating relationship to art. As such, our design responds with a slight satirical poke in tow:

Presented are paintings with contrasts modified after Johannes Itten’s ‘The contrast of light and dark’. In reference to Ad Reinhardt’s use of comics as a means of art commentary, these have have been positioned amongst a selection of clip art and self reflexive quips.[1]
