In an interview with Kevin Finn for Open Manifesto 3 in 2007, I said that I thought that there was a case to be developed that, “Good graphic design is the poetry of art.”
I haven’t got much further with this notion but am still convinced that if it is true it’s because of all the rules and constrictions that we impose upon ourselves, which add up to a kind of freedom and permission to play.
I first started this game by exploring the words that it suited me to pretend should be part of visual language and its grammar. I then tried to mimic how to construct a grammar from its various constituent parts by making something an audience could visually put together in their heads. I used the terms given in the brief (direction, tone, colour, texture, scale and movement) and my extended list.
The content and the carrier are slight; just a three dimensional version of a favourite letter from a favourite typeface.
